COALITION OF PRESERVATION GROUPS AND LOCAL ACTIVISTS OPPOSES PROPOSAL TO BUILD A CASINO NEAR GETTYSBURG NATIONAL MILITARY PARK
The Stop the Slots Coalition, comprised of the National Parks Conservation Association, the Civil War Preservation Trust, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation Pennsylvania, and No Casino Gettysburg, is concerned that a casino would conflict with and detract from Gettysburg’s unique and compelling history. However, the opposition to this proposal runs much deeper than these five groups, it includes our country’s youngest citizens.

CIVIL WAR PRESERVATION TRUST ANNOUNCES THE "FIND THE POCONOS" CONTEST

On April 4, 2006, the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) released an independent report about the impact of a large casino on Gettysburg and the surrounding region. In response to the report, entitled "The Impact of a Large Casino on the Gettysburg Area: A Realistic Assessment"; Chance Enterprises issued a news release attacking CWPT for commissioning the report.

The nonpartisan National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) today testified at a public hearing in Harrisburg, urging the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) to reject Chance Enterprises' application for a license to build a casino with up to 5,000 slot machines within a mile of Gettysburg National Military Park.

CAVALRY FIELD

In recent weeks, Chance Enterprises, the investment group trying to build a new casino within a mile of East Cavalry Field, has tried to diminish the historic significance of the East Cavalry Field site, in order to improve their chances of getting a license for a slots parlor. As a result of the casino controversy, last month CWPT identified Gettysburg as one of the ten most endangered battlefields in the nation.

The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) today condemned plans to build a casino adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park. According to press reports, a group of investors is seeking a license to open a casino at the intersection of U.S. routes 15 and 30, east of Gettysburg.
